Role Reversal

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

Caught up on everything. Service, lab work, book keeping. I love it when people say “you have a great life….you only work like, 20 hours a week”. I just just laugh….ha ha ha. Oh well, beats working for the man.
Speaking of the man, team rider Tim sent me this piece. Enjoy it.

Brighter Days.

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

It cracked me up and made me smile. People who viewed the blog called in to say. Jesus, Jon was pissed off. You bet your ass I was. But you know what happens dear friends. The sun sets on that not so hot day and a new day arrives with new doors to pry open.
And today we opened some doors. Big time thanks to my awesome staff who really kicked ass today. I cant even imagine going to work in a place where people suck. And the patients and bike shop customers today were just super fun too. John Prine sings ‘Thats the way the world goes ’round…one day your up the next you’re down…it a 1/2 of water and you think you gonna drown…thats the way the world goes round.”.
On the shop front, today we replaced an acient (that would be 3 year old) Fox rear shock. Jesus, 7 positions of pro pedal (that would be degrees of ‘lockout’). The new stuff has 3…and 99% of the bikes I set up are just either ‘uphill’ or ‘downhill’. Super cool moots arrived. Their new 29er Mooto XZircle. 4″ of travel. If I was loaded…I’d get one.
For those of you who care, I found the mule killing a mountain lion photos. I’ll try and post them next blog.
Super fun…our team meeting is tomorrow. I think I start drinking right now to celebrate.

Here’s a good angry one.

Oh Yeah. Its 10:14 and I’m fucking pissed off. Yes dear friends Fucking pissed off. My printer doesn’t work. Thats cool, I was only trying to print out a nice little note to a favorite family of mine who’s father passed away almost 2 weeks ago. Awesome Arab family from Detroit. Everybody thought this guy was a terrorist. Not really, He was just the chief of surgery at the Henry Ford Hospital Emergency Room. Yeah, thats all. Fucking terrorist….jesus h. christ.
So here we are. Not enought time today to check out Replay sports. They had their last day today. Out of business. Gone. Nico is a good mechanic and a good service manager. Maybe I’ll hire him? Who knows.
What was I doing while bike people from around PC and the surrounding areas raped and pilliged the store? Seeing patient and then fixing bicycles until 7pm. And honestly, I’d have it no other way. Excellent dentistry today AND excellent service. And guess what bitches, it all happens again tomorrow. Game on.

Back from Mule Riding

Monday, March 17th, 2008

Back from Mule riding. For those of you who don’t know, Kim and I own a Mule…..Sheeza 10…or just Sheeza….sometimes Sheeza pain in the ass if you know what I mean. In all honesty, she is a great animal and we love her to pieces. She’s the bomb.
A little snow in Antimony, but riding in a storm hardens you up. Got to try out Freddie’s new GPS system. Fun, but more of the learning curve thing. So, back home we are, bicycle parts to order, time to get ready for the week and such.

Best Day Ever

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

Best day ever. As in it started in a fashion where I could not seem to get anything done. Its a day off…..what that really means is I work from home. For every one thing I accomplished, there were two more things to do. I even overdrafted $4 on my personal checking account. Dammit! One more thing to take care of.
Then I went nordic skiing at 2 o’clock. Best day ever. New Atomic world cups freshly waxed and brushed to perfection. Fast day with soft spots…but as Paul Clark says “a net gain”. Yes indeed. Then back to work and only accomplishing 1/2 of what I wanted. Oh well. I’ll get all the orders done and such on Friday.
Its going to be a long shoulder season, for those locals who see this, think about a road or cross bike if you don’t own one. I’ve been doing a lot of ordering for MTBers who are getting into the road thing because until mid June, I’d say there’s going to be round valley and thats it.

Sunny Days

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Last week was my first non car week of the year. Meaning I left the car in the garage the whole week. In the cycling world, there is a ultra cool stigma to being a ‘cars r coffins’ guy and not owning a petrol bomb. I have realized however, that helping by riding any day….even if its one trip in the whole year…helps. One trip may turn into a ‘just ride the good days’ or ‘just ride the sunny days’ or ‘how cold can I go’. All of these help and you still get to keep your car for the dump days when you need it or those emergencies where time is of the essence.
What else…….Ski’d my first and last Deer Valley day today. I was great. Loved skiing with Kim, sunny days. Saw a bunch of friends. Magic.
Back to work tomorrw and going in early to price stuff in. Season is just around the corner baby.

Steel is real

Friday, March 7th, 2008

Very excellent day. Got to see one of my favorite….if not fmy avorite patient families today. Had a fun old school Basso in the shop. Got to talk about carbon fiber (fibre) vs. steel….or ti.
Can you guess what my old man thoughts were? Plastic bikes. Thats fine, but I’m a corn fed, sioux indian, 210 pound, tonidique (Bo’s term…sound it out) rollin’ at ya.
So I said, carbon maybe lasts 5 years. Steel (or ti) lasts 20…or a lifetime.
Hey, Lance was in Utah. It was all over the news. People ask me all the time if I admire Lance. I do admire his ability to suffer and his comeback from cancer. I don’t celebrate the doping or the cover up. Yes, Lance doped. Yes, they all do. Maybe you think I’m an asshole for being honest and not holding out the glimmer of hope that the sport is clean. Pro riders have asked me for a cycle of steroids, cortico-steroids and HGH for their endevors. I said no. Some of them actually said, “thats cool, you don’t have to train for a living”. I thought to myself, “you go to college, then try to get into dental school, then you grab the needle and the handpiece and go to work”. All I said was “What is your student loan balance?” Fucker. Anyway, here is a livestrong pic to pray to.

Good People Today

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

Today was full of good people. Not just good people at the dental office, but good people at the shop and good people in the cycling industry. Let me just say, without kissing ass, that I will be using, buying, and pushing Jagwire cables until the end of time. I had such a positive experience and a fun little connection with the company that it made me jump to another connection in the industry that I felt our shop was leaving behind. That led to another email to a friend who I normally only see in Fruita. Funny how the world works. Too bad I don’t have more time to weave the web. Work does get in the way. Speaking of work, I’ll try to post another pic of me on ‘vacation’. Note the dental bullshit and the new SBS catalog….so funny how I’m still a catalog guy, not an on-line guy…does online have a hyphen. Does hyphen sound like hymen. Is hymen spelled like that or is it hyman. Forget it.
working while on vacation

My ‘taint’ hurts…..5 rides in 3 days.

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

For those of you who don’t know what a ‘taint’ is…it is a piece of cycling anatomy. It gets sore when you haven’t been on the bike for a while. If there are any more quesitons, call your local bike shop and ask them. If they don’t know, go somewhere else…seriously.
When I get more time (wed?), I’m going to really fill everybody in on the rides. Basically, left last Fri for St. George. For those of you not in tune with Utah, it is the furthest city south (with palm trees - no shit). It was 75 and sunny all weekend. So, arrived after 4.5 hrs in the car and a lunch at 80mph. Rode Gould’s trail in Hurricane (pronounced hurricne…really). Awesome. Then a night ride on Stucki Springs loop. Very nice. Glad to use my night light for the second time in a year. Saturday, Jem trail with Jason Jones. Super fun. Then, my friends, the race course at the Bear Claw Poppy Trail. I showed up several beers into it at about 3pm. Everybody was like “hey, where were you during the race”. “fuck you, I was out riding….was really my only response”. It was fun to ride the course easy and I picked up about a thousand GU wrappers. My wife, Kim, said “man, the race stays the same, but the faces change”. More on that later. Anyway, after going to bed at 8:30pm, got up and rode Owens and City Creek Trail. Excellent way to start the day. A cold front moved through so the temp in the morning was about 5o and sunny. boo hoo. Then I drove home 4.5 hours and shoveled 6 in of snow off my driveway. Yeah.
