2008 Fruita Fat Tire Festival is in the books baby

Monday, April 28th, 2008

Crazy time is over dear friends. Deja Vu? Rolling in last night, passing out at 9pm and then having to get up super early to go to work and play catch up. Can you feel the anger? Well, at least its the greatest office and shop ever and a bunch of cool people are rolling in today. They are worth it. And, I”ll have plenty of time Wed to upload all th DeAnza ride photos, some new songs, etc.
Fruita. First and foremost, a big thanks to the Over the Edge crew. www.otesports.com A Thousand thank you’s to Troy, Sarah, the crew, the sponsors, etc. Riveter played on SAt night….Fantastic. If I had more time, I’d look up their link. I’m sure you all can find them. Riveter out of Grand Junction.
The riding. Well, seemed like I couldn’t get down there on Friday. Finally did. Showed up at 18 Road at about 5pm and rode until 7. Perfect. Maybe just a touch chilly and NOBODY on the trails. Joe’s Ridge, Frontside, Kesselers, Zip, All perfect. And way cool - my LEAST favorite drops on Zippidy was re-routed. Thanks gang. Met some super cool folks on Zip to ride with. Very nice.
Saturday was a chance to go to Grand Junction and tear it up. Now, for those of you who don’t know….a couple of years ago, I helped Troy sponsor a little film showing in GJ. Do you know what ’sponsoring’ means…….it means that you get a ton of free beer tickets AND everybody there starts buying you beers and shots. This is not helpful when you have 4 beers and 2 Jagers at dinner with your wife. Yes….and its also not helpful that the microbrew beer is more than double the strength of the fine lager here in UT. What does this mean, this means that straight up college style yours truely Big Jonny ends up sleeping on the bathroom floor of the cheap motel. And you thought I was mature? This was a nice first impression to ChrisP’s lady friend who stayed with us in the room and had never met me before. That’s okay bitches, I still got up at 6am the next day to race the 50/50. Yes it was rough.
But I’m getting off track. The 50/50 was too hard. Too much walking for a race. And I wanted to have a flow-y fun ride and really enjoy the grand junction trails. So, The Lunch loop, gunny loop, The famous Ribbon, Andy’s. Maybe a little longer than I wanted, and I was getting a little scared of running out of water and cliff bars, but hey, made it just fine. Super excellent ride.
Big thanks to Nate -Dog for the after hours party that I stayed too late at. Thanks to New Belgium for the free beer. Etc, etc, etc.
7am up and at em’ Sunday. Riding Rustlers, marys, horse their. Then, for a closing. Back to town at 11am for Fiesta Guadalahara (sp?). One of my all time favorite places to eat in this world.
Really, my only picture……Jeff Lewnowsky (sp, I’d look it up if I had time). The best street guy in the world brought to you by SRAM. Anyway, check it out.

Trying to get to Fruita

Friday, April 25th, 2008

Yes, I had every intention of leaving yesterday after work. But you know how that goes. Guests in town, tequilla to drink, sleep to catch up on. The snowy weather outside didn’t motivate me either. It was snowing when we left the bar - and top shelf to the Red Wings for pulling it off against the Av.

More photos from the Deanza ride and others when I get back on Sunday. Time to pack up the demo Cinco and to ride Fruita on the Moots… in a place where all the snow is gone.

2008 DeAnza Ride is in the books

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Yes, its been crazy. Yes, I’m drunk. But there is still time to write a blog. The 2008 DeAnza Ride is in the books. Yes there was a lot of desert. Yes, I ride a mule, Yes, that 1/2 horse and 1/2 donkey and 100% fucking awesome and tough as nails.
Yes, they have mexican restaurants in Calixico that don’t speak in english. Yes, its 14 hours from Antimony to Calixico. Yes, its 200 miles from Calixico to riverside. And Yes, it WAS hot out there.
No phrases can sum it up. Here’s a fun photo though. My inlaws met me at beautiful Lake Perris to bring the ride on in on the last day. It was fun. Here’s Sheeza and me.

Hey, before I split to go ride the mule, thanks to Cycling Utah for the great article located HERE.

LeMond sues Trek

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Had to post this….big thanks to big jonny…the drunkcylist for this headsup.

And dear readers, this is a reason why we sell small brands and EXACTLY why you all should buy a Moots. In fact, buy two.

LeMond sues Trek Bicycles INC. stating that they’ve basically dropped the ball on his ‘line” of bikes. I’d be pissed too….Gary Fisher Rigs are outselling Lemond MinMax’s 100:1 or more.
Anyway, read about it here.

Winter my friends

Monday, April 7th, 2008

I love it. UPS brings me more cycling stock each day…the Fruita Fat tire festival is just around the corner….service bikes have been flying in and out of the shop. Feels like Spring to me…
Then blam - O. 12 inches. For many of you who have known about the 7 or 8 feet of snow on my lawn. Here is a pic from this morning…which was a ‘two snowblow’ morning. The snow pile is only at about 5 feet. Will my sprinkler lines be crushed?
The storm seems like its letting up…and just in time for work. Just my luck my ski’s got storage waxed last Wed. Oh well. I bet it’ll be nice in Calixico. This will most likely be my last blog unitl Sunday the 20th of April. Happy trails until then wihle I’m out on the mule.

Riding in Antimony, UT

Monday, April 7th, 2008

What a weekend. Excellent riding but 3 crashes on the 6 hour Sat ride. Not me. 3 riders down on the same day. We had some first time visitors to Antimony and they asked “is this pretty standard?” I said “Yeah, isn’t horseback riding fun?”.
Thank God, no injuries. Seriously. As a matter of fact, I don’t want to think about the rodeo’s anymore…they make me nervous.
What I will tell you about is how awesome Sheeza is. That would be the mule. She, at 25, is ready once again for the 70th annual Juan Bartista DeAnza ride. If you look at the schedule on the main page, that’s why we’re working Wed and off Fri.
From 2 weekends ago, here’s Kim and our friend Rooster. No, not Mike, or Jimbo or Tommy. Rooster.

MLK

Take a minute and remember that many years ago today the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was gunned down on the balcony of his hotel room. What can you do? You decide.
I decided to install some sick ceramic bearings and a sexy K Force Light on a sweet repair bike today. After driving to work like a pussy all week, I sucked it up and rode. It was a really really really really good idea. It felt great. At this point, the XtraSalsa brakes sound like hell hounds on the rims. The grind of the studded tires on the pavement is getting a little old too.
There have been many requests for this picture since many people know that the DeAnza ride is approaching. So, here it is. This is NOT Sheeza, my sweet mule, but the famous “mule killing a mountain lion” picture. This is exactly what Sheeza would do for me. People, believe me. I”ve got so much to blog, I’ll try and make it happen Sunday.
This should put to rest any questions about how loyal and tough mules are. Any horse would run for the hills.

April Fools Day

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

Kinda surprised that www.dirtragmag (dirt rag) and velonews.com (velonews) didn’t have more april fools stuff.
Oh well. Busted up my thumb pretty good doing repairs today. It kinda hurts to type. Thats okay - I’m not a pussy.
Well, getting ready for the DeAnza trail ride this month. This means that I’m gone for 9 days and I pay the whole crew. What a nice boss I am…right? Here are some pics from our last outing with the Regulators last weekend. And yes, Kim can hang with the demons just fine. Tomorrow, a day off, but I’ll be at the shop all day. FULL with repairs. But you know, dear friends, I’d have it no other way.
