Lance is Okay.

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Team Pro rider, AZ superstar and dear friend of mine Lance Runyan has survived a 45mph blowout. His secret? The Dharma Wheels Team Kit. Yes, Indian magic saved the day. Those scratches will heal…Lance is strong.

DWC HU trip in the books.

What a great trip. Let me start with that.
Really, a great weekend trip. We arrived thursday night, and after a dreamless sleep, arose early to get a table for 6 at the Bear Paw Cafe in St. George….my personal favorite breakfast place. I’ve always liked big breakfasts on trips. Maybe its how I was brought up, or maybe the fact that even a huge breakfast is less than 1/2 the cost of a big lunch or dinner.
We rode the legendary Gooseberry Mesa trail on Friday. The weather was cool, but clear. Riding made for plenty of heat to keep us all warm.

On the trail, we met Jason from Denver.

We also met some ATV’ers from Delta who cooked us ‘lunch’. And by lunch I mean bratwurst with cheese in the middle, ham dip, and a shit ton of candy. Rather than give a weak and pitiful ‘well, I usually eat vegetarian’, I just shut my pie hole by stuffing a brat in it. It didn’t kill me. We finished the ride, rode Goulds after a quick recharge at Over the Edge Hurricane, then took over Lopitas.

Saturday involved a guided tour/ride of Little Creek, including the ‘new’ trails that were being developed the last time I was down there. Again, amazing terrain, amazing views, and amazing riding by some skillful cyclists. After the ride, we set up the Bon Scott Whiskey Bar at Over the Edge and got takeout from Lopitas. It was great.
Sunday, we all rode the Bear Claw Poppy trail. Tons of fun. From easy to difficult terrain. Super fun.

A super fun trip, great to ride with the team, big thanks to all who made it happen.

Gearing Up for the trip.

Seems like an early spring this year. And thats nice. One of the only drawbacks of an early spring is that people flood the shop all at the same time for repairs. This gets in the way of “custom” season. Well, I wouldn’t exactly say….in the way…since thats how we pay the bills around here. But it makes for busy days. I don’t mind those. And neither does Jason

We had a record number of tire levers break at the shop this week. It’s funny, because when I work in the shop, I use the old school tire lever designd lever…usually one I have found on the trail that is pink or green. I think my levers usually last about 4 years on average….and maybe 1000 tire changes a year. Well I broke one yesterday – not on a super beefy steel DH tire, but mounting a Maxxis 29er tire. Kevlar. Then I proceeded to break a park lever. Then, this week, more levers. While I’m saving the world from tooth decay and gum disease I hear from the back…..”broke another lever, mind if I use the metal moto lever Dr. Jon” “Absolutely not” I muttered through my mask. The exact consult in the shop was “do it with a plastic fucking lever, figure out how it fucking works, and fucking don’t break anything. Got it?”. And you thought I was a nice, easy going boss to work for? Thats okay, my mechanics have ice running through their veins – and you need to when you work on $10,000 bikes. I took a picture of the levers…including the moto lever.

In other news, my coveted hairnet cycling cap has been outdone by the beernet. Well Done Matt…I’ll see you in PDX this year.

And Just in case you needed any sort of motivation to get you through your day, week, month or life…..this is it.

I’ve been to the well.

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

Before I reminise about the well, in an email from JR, let me go through some quotes of the week.

“I’ll never buy a used bike or frame ever again. This is the only way to go” -another satisfied customer
“Teamwork makes the Dream Work” – bartender
“You know me, when I’m at work – I’m just here” – sales person…I’d fucking fire her.

I think this is the solution.

Allright, lets talk about one of my favorite rides in Flagtopia….The Clints Well Ride…..
I dont live in the FlagPole anymore. The literal term when I lived there was going to the “Well” really ment going there. If you look on a map just south of Flagstaff there is a gas station called Clints Well. 54 miles out 54 miles back and not one stoplight. Just and endless road rolling out infront of your wheel. Perfect for training, no stops, no rest, no coasting, just pedal and get your head straight.
Fast forward to now. Now Im down in the Dirty T. Swayed by the love of a woman and the lure of the dollar. One was a good choice, the other not so much. But now going to the well means something different. There are too many stop lights and not enough ribbon of road to match Clints Well. But in the Dirty T we have something different, we have speed, and a metric shit ton of it.
Yesterday a friend and I went to the well. Now its different. Its still getting my head straight but now I look at the licence plate of a moto.
105 miles in 3 hours and 37 minutes. Wolf would be happy. He used to say go till your legs hurt to the touch. Then take a few “Billy Rides” and then go back to the well.
When you get a chance go to the well.

The DWC crew arrived to help WPT celebrate the Leadville movie showing this evening at the Santy.
Thats cool, our shop showed it at Sundance….bitches.

Its like being crushed by RDV

Well, Happy St. Patrick’s Day Laddie.

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

The quote of the day yesterday…at the bar was. Kimstress: Great, it’s St. Patrick’s day tomorrow and Jon is unsupervised – “wonderful”.
No swashbuckling. Just finishing off a 3.2% Utah beer and a 1/2 Jager shot. Then a cup of tea before bed time.
We have a St. Patrick’s Day bike……bitches.

Yes, all frames at the shop get faced and chased you nimrods. What else would you expect?
The voler apparel has arrived at the shop and is ready for your sweaty ball sacks and your back hair.
Because as always, its best to try before you buy.
The voler stuff is nice. Even Stevil is using them for his kit.

Let me leave you with this from Big Jonny.

Quotes and such.

Its been busy…..

very busy…

So busy that you can’t see the cork board. But thats cool…thats how I pay the $83,000 in loans I owe each year.
We are at the ides of March and ironically, we have had 15 custom bikes go out the door since Jan 1st. Thats 1/2 way to the goal of “the dirty” 30 (down from “a n ifty”50 last year).
Just in case you thought that Hurl and I were the only grown men who still got into fights…check out the Badger.

And in MLPS news, the slick 50 is on.

Quote of the day on Tues : Kim: How are you today? Patient: I’m great. I got up this morning and smoked a huge bowl. Then I decided that I was going to take the day off today.
Can you hire me?
Other quote of the day : I’m here to compare prices.
Kim: We don’t do that sir – and I don’t have the time to go through your treatment plan from ‘office x’.
Another patient: People actually do that? Jesus Christ, what a fucking moron.
You really can’t make this shit up.
Alright, I hope you are all enjoying the nice weather around here….get out there and do some distance.

More Moots photos first.

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

There have been many requests to post more photos of the ‘his and hers’ moots.

and here.

The snow bike crew is heading out. I, myself, will be at work, making bicycles beautiful…like this.

In blast from the past news….for all you who have 45 minutes, huge bandwidth and have always wondered what I did at the Hospital…this is pretty much it…right down to the glasses.

And then shit like this.

In all seriousness, if you want to see some impressive action….check out this guy. Fred is the man.

After all those long youtube clips, here is a short one that will make you smile.

This may make you smile too. I love the desert.

Way more entertaining.

Some sort of awards show is on. And here I am paying bills and doing the shop’s book keeping while enjoying a frosty cool road soda.
Then I saw this and had to share.

And then let me share this from Pugfest

Damn, those are some hard looking mother fuckers. I’ll bet those are the kind of guys who have razors in their boots.
Or maybe they just like riding snow bikes. Big thanks to the Mountain Trails Foundation and to Park City Television.

Here’s to old times. And to new times.

What were you doing last night?

Almost as entertaining, Kim and I drove to Provo to watch the University of Michigan mens Lacrosse team stomp BYU. Nice to see the kids giving it their all.
Here are some photos from our foreign correspondent at the Cyclocross World Champs.
First, take in the eastern europeans.

And with that, it is also my duty to inform you that I did not make the lottery selection for Leadville 2010. Don’t cry. And dont’ bitch, I know Ken personally and I entered the lottery just like everybody else….and didn’t get picked like most everybody else. On that note, I also did not get selected for Ride the Rockies, which is a super cool tour type ride. Once again, no bitching! I could go down with ‘industry people’, but no. Homie don’t play that. There is a chance I may just go to Durango for that time to ride…but also, I may just stay here, chip away at the business loan, and ride.
On the other end of the spectrum, with the help of both Satan, and team Evil, I have been ‘approved’ for RAGBRAI 2010. Yippie. I’ve wanted to do that event since about 1999 when my attorney, track cycling coach, and fellow employee Joe, wore his 1986 RAGBRAI jersey and said “You have have to do this ride. Promise me you’ll do this ride. You’ll see, heh, heh, heh.”.
